Challenges (and opportunities?) for SMEs in the Modern Patent World
There are growing concerns that patent laws are increasingly favouring the largest corporations while SMEs are being left behind. For example, there are concerns that large pharmaceutical corporations and tech companies are disproportionately benefitting from recent changes to the US patent system. As another example, there are concerns that Europe’s soon-to-be-introduced Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court may hinder SMEs in Europe. Moreover, the COVID pandemic has introduced new challenges (and opportunities) for small to medium size patent applicants and patent law firms alike. To explore some of these topics and related issues, the theme of the business session presentations for 2023 therefore will be “Challenges (and opportunities?) for SMEs in the modern patent world”.
